How to integrate a dormer window into my roof?
Create gable dormers, shed dormers, or flat roof dormers
You can integrate various types of dormer windows into your sloped roofs.
Before you start, make sure you have drawn or captured your sloped ceiling. Then, place your windows in the locations intended for the dormers: this will serve as a reference to correctly draw your opening.
Creating a Shed Dormer or Flat Roof Dormer:
Draw the area of your dormer by tracing a rectangle at the desired location on the roof. The edges of this rectangle should match the edges of the dormer.
▸ Flat Roof Dormer:
-
Before drawing your area, specify the desired height for the flat roof of your dormer.
-
Then, draw the area: the dormer will automatically be created with a horizontal roof.
-
All that’s left is to adjust the window height, if necessary, so it fits perfectly into the opening.
▸Shed Dormer (with slope matching that of the main roof):
-
Upper edge of the area: place your cursor just outside this edge to display the height of the roof at this level. Then, click inside the area (on the same edge) and replace the indicated height with the one you’ve visualized on the outside.
-
Lower edge: Click on the inner edge of the dormer area and set a lower height than that of the top of the dormer to create the sloping angle.
Creating a Gable Dormer (double sloping):
Draw the area of your dormer following the same steps as described for creating a double sloped ceiling (cathedral-type) in this article: How to add ceilings to my plan?
The only difference is that the edges of this area should be positioned along the edges of the dormer. In other words, you’re creating a miniature roof for your dormer window, using the same method as for creating a cathedral ceiling.
